MJF vs SLS nylon: which powder process wins?
May 23, 2026 · 4 min read · By the Printora engineering team
Both processes fuse nylon powder into tough, support-free parts — so why do we run both? Because MJF and SLS win in different places: surface finish and speed versus geometry freedom and proven materials.
Strength is a wash; finish is not
Mechanically, MJF and SLS PA12 are near-twins. Cosmetically, MJF prints finer detail and a smoother gray skin, while SLS carries a slightly grainier texture that hides scratches better on handled parts.
SLS flies free with complex geometry
SLS needs no fusing agents, so deep channels, lattice interiors and nested assemblies print cleaner. If your design has hidden cavities or delicate internal features, SLS is the safer bet.
Price breaks decide most orders
MJF nests faster and usually prices lower at volume — our instant quote shows both side by side. Rule of thumb: under 20 parts, pick on geometry; over 50, MJF almost always wins on cost.
